How To Stay Away From Broadband Benefit Scam?

Do you want to take advantage of your broadband benefit? Don't be fooled by con artists. Qualifying households receive $50 per month on the internet through the federal government's Emergency Broadband Benefit program. Scammers are attempting to trick you into paying for this program, which is free. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released a press statement this week alerting the public to the social media-based scam.

Have you noticed advertisements on social media offering to 'assist' you in signing up for a government program that will provide you with a 'free' device and internet service in exchange for money or personal information?" While there is a legitimate government program to assist people in staying connected throughout the pandemic, there is no cost to enroll. That's all a ruse.

It's simple to enroll in a real program. The Federal Trade Commission advises:

Only use the FCC and its approved sources to apply.

GetEmergencyBroadband.org is the only legitimate way to sign up for the Emergency Broadband Benefits Program. If another company claims to be able to enroll you in this program, be sure they're an approved provider first. You can also submit an application via mail.

Don't pay for "free" linked devices or services upfront

Those who qualify for the Emergency Broadband Benefit program can sign up for it for free. Never pay to join a benefits program.

Don't offer your financial or other personal information to someone who claims to be from the FCC and phones, messages, or emails you.

Stop if you suspect a call or message is genuine. To find out, call the Emergency Broadband Support Center at (833) 511-0311.

The program began in May 2021 with the goal of keeping people online throughout the COVID-19 epidemic. Over 5.3 million homes have enlisted in the initiative as of September 5, with over 1,100 internet service providers taking part.
